"History will be kind to me for I intend to write it." -Winston Churchill

Well gang - I've encountered one of those vicissitudes of life.

Why does a 33-year old guy that rarely drinks and doesn't use drugs have yellowing skin and yellow eyes?

That was the question that kicked off this saga.

Perhaps a bad-batch of supplements?

I am a meathead after all; bench pressed 405lbs a few weeks ago.

Wasn't the supplements.

On Friday, after experiencing some stomach pain, the women of my life forced me to the emergency room.  After plenty of poking, prodding, and shoving cameras down my throat we determined my bile-duct was obstructed.

Great, just a gall-stone right?

No gall-stone found.  The path is being blocked from outside the duct.

It's a surreal experience; even with COVID-masks on you can sense it in the doctors' eyes.  That awful burden medical professionals carry.

Turns out I have a mass on my pancreas.  The good news is it's not pancreatic cancer.  The bad news is it's still cancer.

It's called Plasmablastic Lymphoma.  It's most commonly found in folks that are HIV-positive, but I am not HIV-positive.  Apparently I'm just an extremely-rare specimen!  The silver-lining of my rarity is that wonderful doctors everywhere are chomping-at-the-bit to get their hands on me.

Tomorrow morning I am heading off to The James at The Ohio State University.  They are going to do some prep-work for a few days and then get to work nuking this sucker out of me.

Needless to say I'm going to be out of the office on vacation for a bit.  As I learn more about my situation I will keep everyone posted.

The Secret to a Happy Life

The greatest heroes of my life are my parents, my grandparents, and my brothers.  Aside from them, one my biggest influences is Charlie Munger; Vice-Chairman of Berkshire-Hathaway.  Probably my all-time favorite investor.

Whenever I have encountered those tough plot-twists of life that hit us all, Charlie's wisdom has been a reliable guidepost for me.  His six-rules for life are part of the latticework of my mind's operating system.

Video: Charlie Munger's Secrets to a Happy Life

  1. Don't have a lot envy.
  2. Don't harbor resentment.
  3. Don't overspend your income.
  4. Be cheerful in spite of your troubles.
  5. Deal with reliable people.
  6. Do what you're supposed to do.

I know for many of you this is going to be deeply, deeply painful and distressing.  Just know that I am going to be okay and my family will be okay.  For hundreds of years, men have been unexpectedly swept away from their families to fight wars.  This is my war.  My draft number was called and I'm ready for a good brawl; I'm hard to kill.  I cannot wait to catch up when this all blows over.

And thus, in the face of the unknown, I'm left with only one option: lock-and-load baby, it's time for a fight.

Watch this.

With love - talk to you all soon,
